Centenary to face Millsaps and Rust at MC hosted New Year's Classic

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary men’s basketball team opens up the 2014 portion its schedule on Friday, Jan. 3 as the Gents travel to Jackson, Miss., to take part in the two-day Millsaps New Year's Classic. Centenary opens with the host Majors at 7 p.m. and closes out the event on Saturday, Jan. 4 against Rust at 6 p.m.

The Maroon and White look to return to win column after dropping its last two outings at Louisiana-Lafayette and Hendrix to close out the 2013 half of the slate. The Gents picked up strong efforts from Caden Cheramie and Kendall Demouchet as the duo each posted double-doubles at Hendrix in the last affair. Cheramie tallied 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds – both team-highs – for his first double-double of the season while Demouchet added 10 points and 10 boards for his second, career double-double. Jonathan Blount posted 20 points in the decision to round out the double figure scorers.

Blount continues to pace the Gents offensively averaging 23 points per contest which is tops in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference while Demouchet has moved to second on the team in scoring with 10 points and ranks second in rebounding with 5.4 boards per game. The Lafayette, La., native ranks 15th in the conference in scoring and 12th in rebounds. Fellow newcomer James Sapp sits atop the rebounding list with 5.6 per contest which stands ninth in the league.

Rust enters the classic sporting a 4-8 record and riding a four-game skid. The Bearcats have a quartet of players in double figures scoring led by Larry Veasley with 19 points, who also paces the team in rebounding with 9.2. Kwahmere Gredic is averaging 13 points with Curtis Stuckey supplying 12 points and Andrew Birk with 11.6 points per game.

Millsaps, which is 1-7 on the season, is led by Murray Kastner with 13.4 points per game with Ryan Berger averaging 12 points and leading the Majors on the glass with 7.6 rebounds per contest.

Following the weekend swing Centenary travels to Rhodes on Monday, Jan. 6 for a 7 p.m. start against the Lynx.
