JACKSON, Miss. – The Centenary men’s basketball team placed four players in double figures as the Gents (5-4) snapped a three-game skid with a 90-82 win over Rust College at the Millsaps’ New Year’s Classic on Saturday evening.

Jonathan Blount led the Maroon and White with 23 points – marking his sixth game with 20-plus points. The Shreveport, La., grabbed six rebounds in the outing tying him with James Sapp for the team lead on the glass.

Caden Cheramie added 14 points for the Gents with 12 coming from Kendall Demouchet. Brandon Campbell and Brooks Pawsat contributed off the bench. Campbell supplied a career-high 13 points as Pawsat posted 11 points for the Maroon and White.

Centenary held a plus-seven advantage on the glass marking the sixth time this season the squad has out-rebounded its opponent and third consecutive on the campaign.

The Gents forced 12 Rust turnovers in the affair and converted the miscues into 19 points.

The Bearcats held the lead much of the opening half leading by as many as seven points, but with 3:23 on the clock the Maroon and White grabbed the lead at 29-27 on a Sapp layup. The Gents pushed the advantage out quickly to six points before taking a 40-37 lead in at the intermission.

Centenary picked up where it left off in the second stanza marching the margin out to 60-49 with just under 12 minutes to play on a Campbell layup. Rust responded cutting the deficit to four points with 9:31 on the clock, but the Gents quickly answered extending the lead to its largest of the game, 12 points (75-63), with just over six minutes left in the contest.

Again RC took a shot at the lead nipping the advantage to 85-82 with 30 ticks remaining, but Centenary knocked down five of its final six free throws to ice the contest.

Centenary returns to action on Monday, Jan. 6 at Rhodes College.
