Centenary swimming finishes second at Austin College Invitational

SHERMAN, Texas – The Centenary men’s and women’s swimming teams clinched second place finishes at the Austin College Invitational. The Gents posted a score of 511.5 while the Ladies totaled 425 points. The University of Texas-Permian Basin clinched the top spot on both sides.

Rachel Olson claimed event wins in the 100-yard fly (1:01.07) and 200-yard fly (2:15.84) with Michelle Gaubert adding an event win in the 100-yard free (56.45). Along with two victories, the Ladies grabbed nine, second place finishes and four, third place finishes.  

Juan Tapia clinched the lone, event win for the Gents with a time of 4:27.35 in the 400-yard individual medley.

Olson and Gaubert with Chelsea Russell and Kayla Thornhill to nab second place finishes in the 200-yard medley (1:59.14) and 200-yard free (1:44.85). The Houston, Texas, native also finished second in the 100-yard back with a time of 1:03.48.

Christy Wolterman finished second in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:36.72 with Russell finishing second in the women’s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22.79. Gaubert and Thornhill each added to the finish total with Gaubert finishing second in the 50-yard free (25:62) and Thornhill in the 200-yard free (2:05.21). Raquel Candal and Alexandria Taylor finished second and third in the 1,000-yard free respectively with times of 11:48.18 and 12:15.80. Russell and Wolterman also finished second and third in the 400-yard individual medley with times of 5:02.97 and 5:14.68.

The men’s 200-yard medley team of Andrew Borel, Austin Butler, Beau Montgomery and Arash Ataei finished second with a time of 1:41.06. The same team also finished second in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:30.85). Butler also claimed second place finishes in the 50-yard free (22:26), the 100-yard free (49.61) along with a third place finish in the 100-yard breast (1:03.17). Borel claimed a second in the 200-yard back (2:06.73).

Centenary returns to the pool on Friday, Jan. 17 at Trinity.
