SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary men’s basketball team ran its win streak to six games following a 71-57 win over Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon. The Gents improve to 13-8 overall and 8-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. SU falls to 6-15 and 3-8 in the league.

James Sapp led Centenary as the freshman from Shongaloo, La., posted 18 points and gathered a team-best 12 rebounds. Sapp has totaled double figures rebounds in the last four contests for the Gents – leading the team in that category in all four outings.

Jonathan Blount led the team in scoring with 20 points. The Shreveport, La., native has scored in double-digits in all 21 games this season.

The Maroon and White shot 45.8 percent from the field in the win and were 24 of 27 from the free throw line. The Gents’ defense held the Pirates to 39.7 percent from the floor including 17.6 percent from behind the arc. The Pirates were 8 for 19 from the charity stripe.

Despite trailing by as many as 13 points in the opening half, the Gents outscored SU 43-22 in the second stanza to continue its winning streak. Centenary chipped away at the Pirates’ lead the opening minutes of the second stanza grabbing its first lead since the 12:06 mark of the first half with 14:11 left to play in the game on a layup by Blount.

After Travis Kurtz gave the Black and Gold a quick lead, Sapp finishes an old-fashion, three-point play to push Centenary back in front. The Gents never trailed the remaining 13 minutes of the contest as they reached their first double-digit advantage with 3:24 left in the game. DJ Hicks gave the Maroon and White its largest lead of the game, 14 points, on a jumper with less than a minute to play.

Blake Scott paced the Black and Gold with 20 points while Sean Myers added 10 points. Scott and Michael Cantu each grabbed a team-best six rebounds in the loss.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Feb. 14 as the Gents host the University of Dallas. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. Fans wearing pink receive free admission to the outing as the Gents assist in the fight against breast cancer.
