Former Gent Whiting to join St. Louis Cardinals for Spring Training

JUPITER, Fla. – Former Centenary baseball standout Boone Whiting has been moved up to the St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training roster. Whiting, a right-handed hurler for the Gents from 2008-2010, was a reliable starter for the team’s Class AAA affiliate the Memphis Redbirds.

Whiting was selected by the Cardinals in the 18th round of the 2010 First-year Player Draft. Whiting tossed 105.2 innings for the Redbirds last season allowing 65 runs on 107 hits with 99 strikeouts and 40 walks. The Oakdale, Calif., native posted a ERA of 4.09 and was 5-5 for the squad.

The righty finished his career with Centenary as the career leader in strikeouts with 247. Whiting holds the single-season mark of 120 during the 2010 season and is also seventh on the list with 86 punch outs in 2009. Whiting is third all-time at Centenary with a 2.97 ERA.

Spring training for the Cardinals begins on Friday, Feb. 28 against Miami.
