SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary baseball team secured the first win of the three-game series as Schreiner University by downing the Mountaineers 7-3 on Friday afternoon. The Gents move to 13-13 and 6-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. SU falls to 12-15 and 3-3 in conference action.

Taylor Reed, Aaron Quintanilla, Marc Martinez and Dakota Brown each logged a pair of hits. Chris Jones added the other hit for the Maroon and White. Reed led the Gents with two RBI while Martinez and Jones added the remaining RBI.

Centenary jumped out a 3-0 lead through the first, five innings and extended its lead in the top of the sixth with two runs as Jones scored on a passed ball and Martinez logged a RBI single to plate Quintanilla.

SU rallied back in the bottom of the frame with its only runs on three, consecutive RBI singles to nip the lead to 5-3. The Gents pushed their lead back out scoring two insurance runs in the eighth as Quintanilla and Martinez scored on two of the Mountaineers’ five errors.

Layton Tromba (3-2) tossed a complete-game victory for his third win of the season. Tromba allowed eight hits while recording three strikeouts and a walk.

Matt Barnett was saddled with the loss tossing 5.0 innings allowing five of the seven runs on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk. Ethan Catalani  pitched the final 4.0 innings surrendering two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

First pitch of Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for Noon.
