Softball claims opener against Trinity; splits doubleheader

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary softball team split the opening doubleheader of the weekend with Trinity University. The Ladies (5-21, 5-9 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) opened the weekend with a 3-2 victory before falling 18-6 to the Tigers (14-15, 9-5 SCAC) in the second game of the twinbill.

Nicole Warren led the Ladies with two hits during the first outing, one of which scored the first run of the game. Centenary, which had five total hits in the affair, recorded four straight hits by Warren, Whitney Patterson, Amber Smith and Abbie Woods. Patterson’s double in the third scored the remaining two runs for the Ladies to mark up the three winning runs.

Lynsi Unruh (3-8) took the win in the circle for the Ladies. Unruh pitched the full 7.0 inning game only allowing two runs off of eight hits, while striking out two batters.

Kaci Wellic took the loss for the Tigers while striking out five and walking only one with five hits allowed three runs.

Katie Castillon (7-7) took the win for the Tigers in the second outing of the afternoon pitching 2.0 innings allowing one run off of two hits with three strikeouts. Katie Glomb pitched the remaining 3.0 innings allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out one.

The Tigers scored nine runs in the second to take the lead over the Ladies 12-1 through the first two innings.  

In fall to the Tigers, the Ladies put up six runs with four coming in their final at-bat. Cadie Hancock led the Maroon and White with three hits at the plate and put up the first run in the second with her second homerun of the season. Emma Viskozki, Patterson, Mookie Allison, Warren, Unruh, and Smith also had a hit each for the Ladies.

Allison and Hancock paced the Ladies with two RBI each followed by Patterson and Viskozki also driving in a run each.

Laura Perilloux (0-10) took the loss for the Ladies allowing 11 hits and seven runs in 2.1 innings. Patterson and Unruh also saw time in the circle. Patterson pitched a third of an inning allowing five hits and six runs while walking one while Unruh tossed 2.1 innings allowing eight hits and five runs with two walks and striking out two.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 taking on the Tigers in the second doubleheader of the weekend. First pitch is slated for Noon.
