Tennis teams fall on first day of SCAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Centenary men’s and women’s tennis teams dropped their opening matches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The Gents opened with a 5-0 loss to Texas Lutheran University while the Ladies were also blanked 5-0 by Southwestern University.

The pairing of Katelyn Alexander and Katie Cornwell fell 8-4 in the top doubles slot with Ashley McHugh and Lauren Beurlot falling 8-2 in the No. slot. Holly Clark and Nicole Martinez concluded doubles action with an 8-1 setback. Cornwell and Clark logged the only decisions in singles action as Cornwell fell 6-1, 6-0 and dropped a 6-0, 6-1 outcome.

On the men’s side, the pairing of Jordan Sangalli and Zachary Provenza and Kane Kershaw and Chris Matthews fell 8-0. Michael Bohme was the only singles action for Centenary falling 6-0, 6-0. The Gents forfeited the final doubles and No. 6 singles slot.

Both squads return to action on Saturday at 8 a.m. in consolation action. The Ladies face Austin College with the Gents squaring off with Southwestern.
