SAN ANTONIO, Texas – An eight-run, eighth inning spoiled the Centenary baseball teams opening contest at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships as the Gents (18-21) fell 11-3 to Texas Lutheran on Friday afternoon.

Michael Schimpf, Taylor Reed, Chris Jones and Preston LeJeune each recorded multiple hit efforts in the contest with Marc Martinez providing a multi-RBI outing for the Maroon and White. Martinez’s two RBI tied the contest in the top of the fourth at 2-all.

Taylor Henry (5-5) took the loss on the bump tossing 0.2 innings in relief of Gents’ starter Layton Tromba. Henry allowed three runs and walked two in the setback. Tromba pitched 7.0 innings allowing three runs – two earned – on eight hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Deadlocked, Schimpf gave Centenary its first lead at 3-2 in the visiting half of the seventh with a RBI single that scored Gregory Monnette. Monnette entered the contest as a pinch runner for LeJeune who led the frame off with a base hit.

The Bulldogs (26-15) answered in the bottom of the inning and regained the lead when Derek Kanas scored on a bases loaded wild pitch. Following a walk to reload the bags, Keaton Bohrmann lifted a ball over the fence for a grand slam and placing the Black and Gold up 8-3. TLU added another three runs in the inning to capture the opening round win.

Thomas Harwell (3-2) picked up the win pitching 2.2 innings while recording a strikeout.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, May 3 as the Gents face Southwestern University in an elimination game. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
