SHERMAN, Texas – The Centenary men’s basketball team rebounded with a 72-68 win at Austin College on Saturday evening to improve to 13-9 on the season and 9-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

James Sapp led a quartet of Gents in double figures scoring as the Shongaloo, La., native garnered his seventh double-double of the season with 24 points and 15 rebounds. It marks the 19th double-digit scoring output for the sophomore this season and his seventh straight.

Travion Kirkendoll chimed in 15 points in the winning effort as the freshman has scored in double figures in 15 outings, including five consecutive. Kendall Demouchet added 10 points for his 10th double-digit scoring effort on the campaign. Donovan Williams rounded out the foursome with 11 points – his first of the season.

Centenary grabbed 44 rebounds in the win – tying a season-high set against the Roos on Jan. 18, 2014. The Gents out-rebounded Austin College by 11 on the night.

In a contest that featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes, Centenary held off a late surge by the Roos to capture the win and set up a showdown Friday against Texas Lutheran with SCAC Championship top seed ties on the line.

Leading by just two at the break, Centenary grabbed its largest lead of the contest, 53-45, with 10:16 to play on the front end of an Isaiah Whitaker free-throw. AC chipped away at the deficit and with 6:29 remaining in the contest grabbed a 56-55 advantage on a Kevin Graham 3-pointer.

The Maroon and White answered back with 10-3 run to regain its eight-point advantage with 2:12 left and never looked back in the contest.

Both squads shot 40-plus percent in the contest as Centenary finished the night shooting 44.2 percent from the floor. Austin College recorded a 44.4 clip from the field.

Cedric Hudson led the Roos with 16 points. Graham added 11 points as Brian Baehl chimed in 10 points.

Tip-off against TLU on Friday is slated for 8 p.m.
