Tennis teams fall in first round of SCAC Championships

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Centenary tennis teams fell in their opening round matches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on the campus of Southwestern University. The Ladies fell 6-0 to Schreiner in the morning session as the Gents dropped a 5-0 decision to the host Pirates.

The Ladies fell behind early to Schreiner dropping all three; doubles matches in 8-0 fashion, but attempted to rally in singles play. Laura Beurlot fell 6-1, 6-0 at the top slot to Leanna Haynes while Katelyn Alexander fell 6-1, 4-1 at No. 3 to Karyn Swink. Katie Cornwell rounded out the final match of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 decision.

The Gents found an early deficit as the squad dropped all three, doubles points 8-0. Kane Kershaw and Erik Norem recorded decisions in singles play as both netters fell in straight sets at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Centenary’s top singles player Stafford Lyons’ match was unfinished at 6-0, 3-0.

Both squads will face Austin College on Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m.
