On the Bump with Layton Tromba

Hello Gent fans and welcome back to “On the Bump”!! This past weekend, we took on  #30 Texas Lutheran in a three game conference series at home to conclude the season.  We needed to win 2 out of 3 games at least to clinch the conference championship for the regular season and host the SCAC conference tournament.  Let’s take a look at the recap for these three games.

In game one, we gave the ball to Holden Novak who battled for us out there, despite not having his best stuff.  He was able to pitch 6.1 innings, allowing 8 hits, 4 earned runs, with 3 BB and 2 K.  He left with a slim 4-3 lead before they blooped a single off reliever Taylor Henry to tie the game at 4-4.  T-Hen buckled down from there, allowing just 2 hits in his 2.2 innings pitched with 4 K’s, picking up his fourth win of the season.

At the plate, we had some great at-bats as people throughout the lineup contributed to the victory.  Cole Lavergne was 2-4 with an RBI, and Aaron Quintanilla, Kody Carson, Brooks Williams, and Dakota Brown each picked up an RBI in the contest.  Cole’s single in the bottom of the 7th was the game winning RBI as we won game one 5-4.

In game two, I was able to take the ball for the first time in weeks and felt great out there.  I ended up with 6 innings allowing 4 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and 3 strikeouts.  We hung on to a 2-0 lead when I came out as Devin Bench came in briefly before we handed the ball to the other two lefties to slam the door, Jake McFarland with two scoreless innings and T-Hen, who struck out the side in the 9th to seal the deal in game two.

At the plate, we didn’t have a ton of offense but we took advantage of some timely hits as Kody Carson and Cole Lavergne picked up the 2 RBI’s in a 2-0 win, clinching us as the host team for the SCAC conference tournament!!

…The dog pile after game two was awesome, but what we as a team realized from that is we just need to have the same dog pile on the same field after this weekend!!

Game three was on Sunday and was for the outright title.  We were going to host the tournament regardless after Saturday’s two victories but with a win Sunday, we would have the best record in the conference.

We gave the ball to Kaleb Kirk in game three and he dealt.  The freshman righty was able to go the distance, allowing just four hits over 9 innings of work, with 0 walks and 4 strikeouts.  He had confidence from pitch one and pitched ahead in counts, forcing early contact, which was great to see.

At the plate in game three, we exploded for 6 runs in the third inning.  Aaron Quintanilla was 2-3 with 2 RBI’s, Brooks Williams was 2-4 with an RBI, and Kody Carson, who has a smooth swing from the left side, opened up the scoring for us with a double and ended the scoring for us with his 2 run bomb over center field in the bottom of the fifth.

We never looked back as we won game three 8-0 and clinched the outright SCAC regular season title.  It was great to see the pitching and defense in fine form throughout the weekend, but we really had some key timely hits as well.

I’ve got to say this is been a great year but I feel like we got plenty more to go.  This team has a lot of fight and the will to win.  We have figured out the formula to winning baseball games and it’s really a ton of fun to be a part of this year’s team.  As long as we play our best game like we have been, I really like our chances!

We will open up the tournament at home with game one against Southwestern at noon on Friday!! We hope to see everyone at Shehee as we look to punch our ticket to the regionals!

Until the next dog pile, Go Gents!!
