Shreveport Times countdown, #15: Strikeout king Cecil Upshaw
Thursday, July 30, 2015

SHREVEPORT, LA - A July 30 Shreveport Times article continuing a Top-20 Countdown of local athletes lists Centenary Baseball Gent and original strike out king Cecil Upshaw at number 15.

Upshaw joins former Ladies gymnast Kathy Johnson Clarke, who came in number 19 on the countdown.

A Centenary Hall of Famer (1989), Upshaw played both basketball and baseball for the Gents and still holds the career ERA mark of 1.18. He posted an 0.85 ERA in 1962 and held the career strikeout mark (204) until 2004. In basketball, he averaged 13.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Upshaw competed in the majors from 1966 through 1975, going 34-36 while tossing 563 innings. He recorded just one home run, and it came on May 25, 1969, against Philadelphia in Atlanta’s 4-1 win.

After the panel's top-20 is released, readers will have a chance to narrow the field to ten. All Ladies and Gents fans are encouraged to cast a vote for the #1 all-time local athlete by emailing
