Women's basketball announces eight newcomers for 2015-16 season

SHREVEPORT, LA - The Centenary College women’s basketball team and head coach Justin LeBlanc, announced the addition of eight new players for the 2015-2016 season on Thursday, September 3.

“I am very excited and proud of this year’s incoming class. My staff and I are ready to begin helping these young women reach their full potential both on and off the court,” said LeBlanc. “We have already addressed a number of things with this group in regards to talent, speed, athleticism, and character. We believe great things are ahead for Ladies Basketball.”

“We are committed to building our program into one that will compete at a championship level. By attracting some of the best players in our region, we believe we are headed in that direction. I know our players and coaches are counting down the days until October 15th,” LeBlanc added.

The following is a list of incoming players for the 2015-2016 season.

 

Savanah Doty

Freshman / Guard  / 5-8

Mesquite, Texas / Poteet HS

Savanah played for both Jonathan McKinney & Rick Westfall at Poteet HS. She finished as the District 10-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player for the 2013-2014 season and was named First Team All-District 2013-2015. Off the court, she earned Academic All-District accolades 2012-2015.

Savanah is the daughter of Dean and Suzanne Doty and has three siblings: Summer, Skyler, and Dillon. At Centenary, she is majoring in psychology.

 

Peyton Hurst

Junior / Guard / 5-8

Carrollton, Texas / Hendrix (Creekview HS)

Peyton transfers to Centenary after playing for two years at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. With the Warriors, Hurst appeared in 43 games, made nine starts, and amassed 152 points.

Playing for head coach Nikki Heath at Creekview HS, Peyton was named Team MVP her junior and senior seasons while being named Second Team All-District her senior year with the Mustangs. She also garnered Academic All-District Accolades her junior and senior season.

Peyton is the daughter of Debbie Melnick Thomas and Bill Thomas and has one sister (Roslyn) and one brother (Drew). At Centenary, she is majoring in psychology.

 

Samantha Lyons

Sophomore / Guard / 5-8

Iota, La. / LSU Shreveport (Notre Dame HS)

Samantha comes to Centenary after playing in 26 games with one start last year for LSU Shreveport. She scored 66 points for the Pilots.

At Notre Dame HS for head coach Nolan Theriot, Samatha earned All-District accolades all four seasons for the Pioneers. Her junior and senior seasons, she was named Crowley Parish MVP. As a senior, Samantha was named District MVP as well as Honorable Mention All-State.

Besides her success on the basketball court, Samantha helped the Pioneers with Volleyball State Championships her freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. She is the daughter of Marcy and Felicia Lyons and has two sisters, Andre and Olivia. At Centenary, she is majoring in biology.

 

Courtney Mills

Freshman / Forward / 5-8

Arcadia, La. / Arcadia HS

Courtney played for head coaches Ruby Qualls and Deandre Alexander at Arcadia HS. Mills earned All-District honors twice and helped guide the Hornets to three State Semi-final appearances. Off the court, Courtney was inducted into the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, was on the Principal’s List at Arcadia HS, and graduated third in her class.

Courtney is the daughter of Kasey and Doug Salvaterra and has two brothers, Dustin Mills and Joseph Salvaterra. At Centenary, she is majoring in medical technology.

 

Jasmine Morris

Freshman / Guard / 5-7

New Orleans, La. / Destrehan HS

Jamine was quite the decorated player at Destrehan HS. She was All-District for three years, All-Tournament, All-State nominee for the Wildcats and was selected for the Senior All-Star game. She also helped Destrehan HS finish as a State Runner-up. Academically, Jasmine made the Honor Roll all four years.

 

Jasmine is the daughter of Jerome and Gabriella Morris. At Centenary, she is majoring in chemistry.

 

Shelby Sheppard

Freshman / Forward / 5-8

Monroe, La. / River Oaks School

Shelby played basketball for head coach Rob Garlington, but also participated in soccer, track, and swimming at River Oaks School. She was named Most Improved her sophomore season, won the Coach’s Award and All-District Honorable Mention her junior year, and won the Rebound Award her senior season for the Mustangs. Off the court, she was also very busy as Shelby won the Senior Academic Award as well as twice made the Louisiana State and District Literary Rally. She also won the FCA Award, the Tops Award, and was a member of the Student Council.

Shelby is the daughter of Teresa and Phillip Sheppard and has three siblings: Allyson Borden, Katie Jones and Clint Sheppard. At Centenary, she is majoring in psychology.

 

Sheridan Smith

Freshman / Guard / 5-8

Lake Charles, La. / Grand Lake HS

Sheridan played basketball for head coach Brandon McCready while also playing softball and ran track and field at Grand Lake HS. She graduated with honors from Grand Lake.

Sheridan is the daughter of Gerard Smith and Loria Hardin and has four siblings: Mindy and Tori Smith, and Hannah and Emma Hardin. At Centenary, Sheridan is majoring in business.

 

Erin Temple

Freshman / Guard / 5-4

New Orleans, La. / Cabrini HS

Erin played for Nancy Walsh at Cabrini HS. She was a decorated athlete for the Crescents, earning All-District honors all four years of high school, being named Second Team her freshman season and both First Team and Defensive Player of the year accolades her sophomore-senior seasons. Other accolades for Erin include playing in the Orleans vs. Jefferson Parish All-Star game, being named New Orleans Metro Player of the Week and the Dominican Thanksgiving All-Tournament team. Academically, Erin made the Alpha Honor Roll and was a Renaissance Gold Card holder.

Erin is the daughter of Eugene and Olivette Temple and has one sister (Eunique) and one brother (Chad). At Centenary, she is majoring in business administration.

 

The Ladies begin the 2015-2016 season November 13 at Dallas Christian.
