BULLARD, Texas - You do not get a second chance to make a first impression. Freshman Jessica Varner took advantage of that fact in her first collegiate tournament.

Varner led the Centenary College with a 160 (+16) over 36 holes as the Gents and Ladies golf teams both finished eighth at the Al Jones Memorial Tournament September 28-29 at the Eagles’ Bluff Country Club in Bullard, Texas.

“I would really like to blame the blood moon on our play this week,” said head golf coach Emlyn Aubrey. “The fact of the matter is that we are gaining experience and need to keep our chins up, as things will improve with time.”

Varner sat at +6 and in a tie for third after the first day of competition. She turned in an 82 on the final day to finish fifth, the final spot for the All-Tournament team.

“On a brighter note, Jessica finished an outstanding fifth-place in her first ever tournament,” explained Aubrey. “Even better for me is that she was not at all pleased with her performance. Needless to say, I am very excited to see what the future holds for this young lady!”

Fellow classmate Taylor Adair joined Varner a top the Ladies leaderboard, improving by eight strokes on day two and finishing 26th with a total of 188 (+44). Sophomore Haley Nidey and classmate Toni Collaro finished 37th and 38th with totals of 233 (+91) and 236 (+94), respectively.

On the men’s side, senior Chris Cates and sophomore Graham Maxwell finished 38th and 39th with two-day scores of 174 (+32) and 186 (+44). Senior Stafford Lyons (194, +52) and Justin Conover (245, +103) finished 41st and 42nd.

Host UT-Tyler claimed both men’s and women’s team titles, with the men finishing with a combined score of 598 with the women totaling 638.

The Ladies return to action at the Southern Showdown, hosted by Birmingham Southern, October 4-5. The Gents return to the links October 13 for the Buccaneer.
