SHREVEPORT, La. – In a game that featured 12 ties and 18 lead changes, the Ladies fell behind halfway through the fourth quarter and could not catch up as Centenary (1-1) fell to East Texas Baptist (0-2) 70-62 Tuesday night, November 17, in the home opener for the Maroon and White.

Through the first 17 minutes of the game, neither team led by more than three until April Leonard hit a pair of free throws to give the visitors a 26-21 lead with 2:25 left in the first half. However, freshman Erin Temple nailed a three. Senior Briana Edwards then grabbed a steal and hit junior DeiAnna Hall running down the court for a faastbreak layup to tie the ballgame. Edwards then grabbed a defensive board and found sophomore Samantha Lyons for a fastbreak triple to cap an 8-0 Ladies spurt in only 16 seconds.

Edwards only managed a basket, but turned in a solid night in other categories, leading the team in rebounds (10), blocks (four), assists (three) and steals (two).

Both teams stood tied at 11 after the first period. Freshman Jasmine Morris, who upped her collegiate best to 25 points in the game, scored nine of Centenary’s points.

Despite East Texas Baptist shooting 39.7 percent (27-for-68) to Centenary’s 27 percent (17-for-63), the Ladies took advantage by making as many free throws as East Texas Baptist attempted (21). Hall went perfect from the line for the home team, hitting all eight attempts.

However, the Tigers held a 40-16 edge in the paint.

After the 12th tie with 5:45 left in the game, East Texas Baptist’s Cekret Davis took April Leonard’s feed of a steal to put the Tigers ahead for good with 4:49 left in the game. Lauren Lee than made a layup.

Centenary missed three shots and a pair of threes in an attempt to draw closer to East Texas Baptist, but the Tigers used a pair of offensive rebounds until Taylee Alexander made a lay-up for a 56-51 lead with 3:16 left.

Centenary cut it to two four times the rest of the way, but East Texas Baptist went 6-for-7 the rest of the way for the 8-point win.

The Ladies return to action Saturday, November 21, against Millsaps. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
