SHREVEPORT, La. – It is always a good night when a three decade-old record bites the dust. Oh, and 21-straight to begin the second quarter does not hurt either.

The Ladies held their opponent scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the second quarter and broke the 33-year old team blocks record as Centenary (5-4) knocked off Crowley’s Ridge (3-10) 82-73 Saturday afternoon, December 19, at the Gold Dome.

Centenary finished the game with 12 rejections, one more than the Ladies recorded against Wiley College January 27, 1982.

With the Maroon and White down 21-16 after one, only senior Briana Edwards managed a free throw in the first three minutes of the second quarter for either team. However, a 20-point outburst by the home team during the next three minutes gave Centenary its biggest lead of the game. Freshman Savanah Doty hit a jumper while Edwards split from the line after being fouled on an offensive board. After a defensive stand, Edwards put the Ladies in the lead, 22-21 with 6:20 left in the half with a layup.

Edwards finished the game with her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards. She also tallied half of the team’s blocks in the game.

Junior DeiAnna Hall – who finished the game with 14 points, including an 8-for-10 mark from the charity stripe – added a pair from the line and then a layup to open up a five-point advantage. Freshman Erin Temple dialed up from distance on a fastbreak and Hall hit another pair from the charity stripe to push the lead to double-digits. Temple capped the run with a pair of triples as Centenary led 37-21 with 3:40 left.

Temple finished the game with five three-pointers on 12 attempts to finish the game with 15 points, her first double-digit scoring output of her collegiate career. She added another triple later in the quarter to open up a 42-23 Centenary advantage with 1:40 left in the second quarter.

Freshman Jasmine Morris led the Ladies with 21 points.

However, Crowley’s Ridge fired back a 19-2 run spanning both halves to cut the lead to just a single possession. Taylor McKuin completed an old-fashioned three and Sarah West hit a triple in a 20-second span. West then split from the line for the final points before half as the Ladies held a 42-30 lead into halftime.

A steal and fastbreak hoop by Morris after half put the Ladies up 14 out of the break, but the Lady Pioneers countered with 12 unanswered in the next two minutes. Hannah Kirk made a layup and a pair of jumpers to cut the lead to single-digits. Hannah Willard then made a pair of layups around a Nicki Pierce steal and hoop as Centenary led 44-42 with 7:36 left in the third. Up by four with less than a minute left in the quarter, Temple hit a fastbreak three and classmate Sheridan Smith split from the line on consecutive trips. Centenary built the lead to 57-48 going to the fourth.

Centenary never led by less than four in the fourth as the nine-point spread proved to be the final margin in the game.

Willard led the Lady Pioneers with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Centenary returns to action for its final game of 2015 Thursday, December 30 at Hendrix.
