Seniors Sent out in Style in Swimming Sweep of Austin College

SHREVEPORT, La. – Wins in 15-of-22 of events led to a successful sweep for the swimming Gents and Ladies as Centenary won the senior meet against Austin College with a combined total of 192-170 Saturday, January 16.

The Gents knocked off the ‘Roos 97-86 while the Ladies claimed a 95-84 win.

Leading the way for the women’s team was freshman Elena Ring, who claimed wins in the 200 IM and 100 breastroke, as well as a member of the 200 medley relay. Ring and junior teammate Jane Barney went 1-2 in the 200 IM with times of 2:23.86 and 2:25.14, respectively. Ring won the breastroke with a time of 1:15.40, nearly seven seconds faster than her nearest competitor.

While the Gents were dominate throughout, the end of the meet is where the Maroon and White shined. In started in the 100 breatstroke, where junior Juan Tapia easily claimed a win with a time of 1:03.51. However, the Gents rallied in the next few positions to claim a 1-4 event sweep. Taking 2-4 were seniors Erick Norem III, Michael Pullano and Arash Ataei, touching the wall in 1:05.78, 1:06.35 and 1:06.84, respectively.

In the 400 free, sophomore Anthony McDonald swam anchor and caught Austin College in the final 50. McDonald, Tapia and freshmen Stetson Carlile and Paul Ahluwalia won the event with a time of 3:25.97.

McDonald also claimed two individual event wins as he took the 200 free (1:49.98) and 100 free (50.23).

Ataei closed out his home career at Centenary with a victory in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 52.65.

It was a senior sweep of the 100, 200 and 500 frees on the Ladies side as Daniela Ruelas won the 100 with a time of 1:02.64 and Raquel Candal won the 500 with a time of 5:45.06. Freshman Rebecca Dunn finished behind Candal with a time of 5:56.89 in the event.

Candal also took the 200 free with a time of 2:09.61.

Rounding out the individual wins was Barney and Dunn finishing 1-2 in the 100 butterfly with times of 1:06.72 and 1:09.28.

Both the Ladies and Gents claimed wins in the 200 medley relay to start the meet. Ring, Candal and Dunn teamed up with senior Chloe Snow to win the event for the Ladies with a time of 2:04.58. Pulano and Ataei teamed up with sophomore Mason Kay and freshman Harrison Folse for the Gents win in a time of 1:43.02.

The Gents senior quartet of Ataei, Pullano and Norem III with Collin Baker won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.32.

Both teams take nearly a month off before returning to action Wednesday, February 10 for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
