SEGUIN, Texas – The Ladies were able to cut a 14-point, third quarter deficit to three, but Centenary (6-12, 1-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) could not complete the comeback as it fell to Texas Lutheran (9-9, 5-2 SCAC) 89-81 Saturday, January 23.

Trailing 49-35 midway through the third, Centenary scored eight straight in less than a minute to cut the deficit to six. Freshman Jasmine Morris hit a triple, while Texas Lutheran came up short on a quick triple. Morris hit a pair from the line before the Bulldogs turned the ball over. Sophomore Samantha Lyons hit a shot from long range. Centenary trailed 49-43 with 4:30 left.

Until about seven minutes left in the game, both teams stayed mostly in a stretch where the Ladies trailed by six-to-eight points. With the Maroon and White trailing 65-56 with about 7:50 left in the game, junior Deianna Hall split from the line and Morris hit a pair. Senior Briana Edwards added a pair from the line to bring Centenary within four.

A three-pointer by freshman Savanah Doty cut the deficit to 75-72 with 3:41 left, but Texas Lutheran hit all 12 of its free throws in the final 2:24 to preserve the win.

Both teams combined to shoot 85 free throws in the game, including 46 in the fourth quarter alone.

Edward paced a quintet of double-digit scorers for the Ladies with 18 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. With four blocks in the contest, Edwards now has three or more blocks in a game this season. Morris came off the bench for 21, including 14-for-16 from the line, and five steals. Senior Rebecca Thompson and Doty added 12 while Hall had 10 points.

Texas Lutheran scored six straight to end the first quarter and four more to begin the fourth to turn a one-point edge into a double-digit advantage. Taylor Dydalewicz and Savannah Hight hit jumpers while Hight finished the quarter with a layup. Hight started the second with a jumper and then a steal and fastbreak hoop.

Despite the eight point outburst, Hight only finished with 12 points. Kristin Lye scored 26 while Dydalewicz added 24.

Centenary returns to the Gold Dome to battle Southwestern Friday at 8 p.m.
