SHREVEPORT, La. – Earlier in the season, the Maroon and White earned its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win in dominating fashion. The Ladies made sure to leave no doubt in its second SCAC victory and their first ever win against the Pirates.

Centenary (7-12, 2-7 SCAC) led from start to finish in a 65-48 win against Southwestern (7-12, 4-4 SCAC) at the Gold Dome Friday night, January 29.

To pick out one area where the Ladies excelled would be a disservice to an all-around team effort. Sophomore Samantha Lyons had a hot hand from behind the arc, making 6-of-8 from distance, to easily lead all scorers with 28. In fact, Lyons scored 17 points in the first half alone, while Southwestern had 19 points total.

Lyons also finished with eight rebounds.

Senior Briana Edwards narrowly missed the double-double, finishing with 10 points and eight boards. However, she also swatted five shots for the sixth time this season with she recorded four or more rejections.

Centenary raced out to a 29-19 lead at halftime, thanks in part to holding Southwestern to 26.7 percent (8-for-30) shooting. The Pirates finished 19-for-61 (31.1 percent) for the game.

While neither team could score in the first minute, Centenary drew first blood and never trailed. Hall split from the line, her only miss in eight attempts from the charity stripe for the night. She finished with 13 points in the game.

Lyons nailed a pair and junior Linda Gomez Gill added a layup for her only score of the game. Centenary led only 10-6 with 2:37 left in the first quarter, but the Ladies wasted no time in tripling up the Pirates. Lyons hit back-to-back triples and freshman Jasmine Morris hit a pair from the line as the lead suddenly grew to 18-6. Southwestern added a layup before the quarter break, but it was not enough to escape the least amount of points Centenary has give up in a first quarter this year.

The Ladies led by 12 in the third when a Lyons three and a jumper around a layup by Hall gave Centenary a 19-point lead, its largest of the night. Southwestern cut the deficit to 10 in the fourth, but the Ladies scored the final six of the game. Hall and senior Rebecca Thompson both hit a pair from the line. Morris grabbed a steal and made a fastbreak hoop to put the exclamation point on the contest.

Southwestern trailed 49-31 with 7:26 left, but a Tori Carraway hit a jumper and layup to ignite eight unanswered for the Pirates. Carraway then forced a steal and found Madison Edwards for the fastbreak hoop. Carraway added a jumper to cut the lead to 49-39 with 5:38 left, but she fouled out a minute later. Southwestern could not climb within 10 in the second half.

Carraway tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Olivia Podaras added eight assists.

The Ladies are back in action Sunday, January 31, against Texas Lutheran at 2 p.m.
