TYLER, Texas – The Gents pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth and brought the winning run to the plate, but the Pirates were able to keep Centenary at bay with 11 strikeouts and two pickoffs as Centenary (6-1) fell to #8 Birmingham-Southern (2-1) 4-1 Sunday afternoon, February 14.

With two outs and a runner at first in the bottom of the ninth, freshnab Jonathan Motal singled and classmate Colten Maples was plunked to load the bases. Freshman Cameron Guin added an infield single as everyone moved up a base and plated a Centenary run, but junior Michael Schimpf ended the ballgame representing the winning run at the plate.

The Gents managed six hits on the day, but stranded a runner at third to end three innings on the day. Schimpf reached third in the first inning of the day, but a strikeout retired the side. The Maroon and White also had a pair on in the second with one out, but two strikeouts ended the threat.

Centenary sophomore starter Kaleb Kirk (1-1) threw seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out six.

The Pirates struck with a pair in the third. Preston White struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch to start Birmingham-Southern. White stole second and an A.J. Hunt single put the Pirates on the board. Back-to-back singles by Taylor McCracken and Jack Rhodes put Birmingham-Southern up by two. A rundown at home on a double steal attempt ended the threat.

A costly error led to a pair of unearned runs for the Pirates in the eighth. After two singles to leadoff the inning, an error by the right fielder scored a run and put a runner at third. A sacrifice fly opened up a four-run lead for the Pirates.

McCracken and Hunt paced Birmingham-Southern with three hits. Kyle Royalty (1-0) recorded the win, allowing two hits with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Vincent Torres face one batter for his first save.

Centenary hits the road next weekend for a non-conference series at Southwestern. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, February 14.
