SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents only scored three runs in the game, but that would be all the offensive production they needed.

The pitching tandem of senior Holden Novak and freshman Matthew Devilllier allowed only one run on three hits and seven strikeouts as Centenary (9-2) beat Schreiner (2-8) 3-1 on the diamond Friday night, February 26.

Novak (3-1) threw 7.2 innings, allowing only three hits and one run with six strikeouts. In two combined starts at home to begin the season, Novak has allowed only two runs (one earned) and six hits with 16 strikeouts in 14.2 innings of work for a 2-0 record.

Centenary scored all the runs it needed in the second. With one out, sophomore Cole Lavergne singled up the middle while senior Dakota Brown put runner on the corners with a base hit to right center. A squeeze play by freshman Colten Maples  plated Lavergne and moved Brown to second. A two-out double by sophomore Ian Graham put the home team up 2-0.

Lavergne led the Gents with two hits in four at-bats and a run scored.

An RBI triple by Schreiner’s Marco Carreo cut the lead in half in the sixth, but the Gents used two-out lightening to plate an insurance run in the seventh. With two down, junior Michael Schimpf singled and advanced to second when classmate Scott Dwyer was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Chris Zapata came through with a two-out hit.

Centenary held on for the 3-1 win.

Devillier picked up his third save, retiring the final four batters of the game in order.

Connor Ver Schuur had two hits in the leadoff spot for the Mountaineers. Caleb Allen allowed seven hits and three runs in all eight innings pitched.

Centenary wraps up the series with Schreiner Saturday, February 27, with a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
