SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents may not have scored in the first inning, but with a pair of hits, the tone was set early. The Maroon and White put eight runs on the board in the next four innings while the Patriots only had one runner advance to third as Centenary (11-3) knocked off #17 UT Tyler (9-4) for the second time this season, 8-0 on Wednesday night, March 2.

A double play ended the Gents threat in the first, but an unearned run in the second put the Maroon and White on the board. However, it was a crooked number after beginning the third with two outs that put the Gents up three. Sophomore Cole Lavergne doubled and senior Dakota Brown was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Ian Graham singled down the leftfield line to score Lavergne and chase Brown to third. A wild pitch scored Brown as Centenary took a 3-0 lead.

A four-run fourth broke the game open. With one out, junior Michael Schimpf walked and stole second. Freshman Colten Maples walked and sophomore Chris Zapata cleared the bases with a double. Lavergne walked and advanced to second on a throwing error that scored Zapata. Graham capped the inning with an RBI single.

Zapata added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Kaleb Kirk (3-2) allowed two hits on only 47 pitchers, 32 of which were strikes. Freshman Matthew Devillier picked up his league-leading fourth save, throwing the final four innings and striking out five.

UT Tyler threatened in the sixth when a one-out walk and hit put two Patriots on. A groundout put a pair of runners in scoring position, but Devillier recorded the punchout in straight pitches to end the threat.

Centenary returns to action next Friday, March 11, when Austin College visits Shehee Stadium.
