Diamond Gents Sweep Weekly Awards

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Announced Monday afternoon, March 14, by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Centenary (14-3, 3-0 SCAC) senior Holden Novak was named Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year, while junior Shreveport-native Michael Schimpf was named Player of the Week.

It was a dominating weekend for the Maroon and White on the field, outscoring Austin College 24-0 in 25 innings March 12-13. The starting pitching rotation dominated in the sweep, as they combined for to not allow a run, only 12 hits and a walk with 19 strikeouts.

Only two ‘Roos made it past second base the entire weekend.

Novak tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing only three hits while fanning 10 batters. He threw 101 pitches in the game, 73 for strikes, and faced the minimum number of hitters in 5-of-9 innings.

Novak leads the SCAC, with fellow sophomore Jackie Allen, with four wins for the season. Novak ranks second in the conference with 34 strikeouts.

Schimpf had an excellent weekend at the plate, going 9-for-14 with five runs scored and 16 RBI’s. He hit a double in every contest, running his hitting streak to 11 games. He has reached base safely in all 17 games of the season. He bumped up his season average to .431, grabbing the lead in the conference in that category.

Schimpf also flashed the glove, making a diving catch in the top of the first of day one in the left-center gap. He threw in to the infield, who relayed the ball to first to double off the Austin College runner.

Centenary returns to action Friday when it travels to Kerrville, Texas, to tussle with Schreiner for another three-game series. In the non-conference slate, the Gents took 2-of-3 from the Mountaineers.
