Baseball Jumps to 12th in Both Polls, Battle with Top-Ranked Team Looms

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – It is as if the baseball coaches and voters conspired to make sure this weekend would feature two of the top-ranked teams in the nation.

In polls released by D3Baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association Tuesday, March 22, the Gents baseball team moved up to 12th in the nation in NCAA Division III baseball.

The Maroon and White found out in the morning that they have jumped from 24th to 12th in the D3Baseball.com ranking, the biggest jump in the pole. In a panel of Sports Information Directors and media members across the nation, Centenary went from 70 votes last week to 296 this week, just 12 votes behind Salisbury.

It was a smaller rise for the Gents in the ABCA poll, as Centenary (17-3, 6-0 SCAC) rose to 12th from a ranking of 16th in the first regular-season ranking last week. The Gents garnered 267 votes, just 11 behind Shenandoah.

Trinity (20-4, 5-1 SCAC), who visits Shreveport this weekend for a huge Southern Collegiate Athletic showdown, took over the top spot in both rankings.

Leading the Gents this season is Shreveport native, junior Michael Schimpf. Schimpf, who currently holds a 14-game hitting streak, ranks second in the country in runs (33), ninth in hits (37), 13th in hit by pitches (seven) and 31st in walks (31). Having reached safely in every game this season, Schimpf leads the SCAC in batting average, hitting at a .457 clip. Senior Dakota Brown, who picked up a pair of wins this past weekend on the mound, sits fourth with a .414 batting average.

As a team, the Gents lead the conference in batting average (.336).

#12 Centenary and #1 Trinity are scheduled to play the first of three games Friday at 6 p.m.
