Ladies Softball Grab Five All-Conference Selections, Miller Named First Team
Friday, April 22, 2016

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – And the historic 2016 Ladies softball season continues. Just hours after capturing its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament win in program history, five Centenary softball players were honored by the conference.

In a vote of the SCAC coaches and announced at the Conference Softball Tournament Friday, April 22, five Ladies grabbed All-Conference honors.

Headlining the All-Conference winners for Centenary (21-21) was sophomore Haley Miller, who garnered First Team All-Conference accolades as a utility player.

Freshman Wendy Gillet appeared on the Second Team as a first baseman, while classmate Nichole Aldridge (pitcher), sophomore Michelle Tasin (second base) and senior Emily Sexton (outfielder) were tabbed Honorable Mention.

With her First Team honors, Miller became the first Lady to receive this distinction in three years. She was a true utility player, making appearances in the circle, at shortstop, at third base and as the designated player. Miller appeared in the circle 18 times 12 starts. She holds a 5-5 record with a 4.61 ERA, three complete games, and an SCAC-leading two saves.

However, to look at just Miller’s pitching numbers would be a disservice. She finished third on the team with a .356 batting average, 26 hits, 13 runs and 12 RBI’s. One of her best games of the season came March 6, when she was perfect from the plate in three appearances with two runs scored. She scored what proved to be the tying run in the fifth inning in a Centenary 6-5 victory in eight innings.

Grabbing second team honors was Gillet, who proved to be one of the best freshmen in the conference in 2016. She leads all rookies in batting average (.418) hits (56), RBI’s (37), doubles (15) and home runs (four). She ranks second in hits, third in doubles, fourth in average and home runs and sixth in RBI’s in the SCAC.

Twice this season, Gillet earned SCAC Hitter of the Week honors. She won the award the final week of the regular season, going 8-for-15 (.533 average) in a four-game series with Austin College. She added nine RBI’s, four runs scored, two home runs and a double to help the Ladies capture a bid to the Conference Tournament for the first time in three years.

Gillet also won the award February 15 after her first games of her collegiate career. She led the team with a .450 batting average, including a hit in all six of the first Centenary games of 2016.

Aldridge also won Honorable Mention All-Conference distinction, leading the team with a 10-13 record in the circle. Aldridge, who started 20 games and appeared 28 times in the circle, holds a 3.09 ERA with a save in 129 innings pitched. She went 3-1 in her first week of collegiate action to be named SCAC Pitcher of the Week on February 15.

Joining Aldridge on the Honorable Mention All-Conference list is Sexton and Tasin, who both made All-Conference last season. Sexton ranks third in the SCAC in stolen bases (25) and fourth in runs scored (38). Tasin is third in the conference in hits (54) and fifth in the conference with a .403 batting average, including beginning the season with a 16-game hitting streak.

Centenary finished the season with a 14-game win improvement from 2015, the third-best mark in NCAA Division III this season. The Ladies also turned in their best season in seven years.

Going 1-1 on the first day of the SCAC Tournament, defeating #5 Southwestern but falling to #1 Texas Lutheran, Centenary returns to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against #6 Schreiner in an elimination game.
