Thursday, May 5, 2016

SHREVEPORT, La. – The accolades continue to pile up for junior Michael Schimpf when the Shreveport native and Captain Shreve High School alum was named to the Academic All-District 8 Baseball Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday, May 5.

“Michael truly exemplifies what it means to be a student athlete,” said head Centenary baseball coach Michael Diaz. “I am proud of who he is and what he has accomplished in his first three years at Centenary. Michael sets the bar very high for what it means to be a Centenary baseball player.”

Schimpf, who holds a 3.92 GPA with a major in history and a minor in French, had a very successful season on the diamond for the Gents.  Earning All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors his freshman and sophomore seasons, Schimpf made it 3-for-3 in his collegiate career when he earned First Team All-Conference accolades in 2016. Schimpf led the SCAC this season with a .425 batting average – a mark that ranks 46th in the nation.  He finished second with 65 hits and third with 45 runs in the SCAC, ranking 16th and 40th in NCAA Division III, respectively.

From February 14-March 26, Schimpf tallied a 17-game hitting streak. The streak included eight-straight games with at least a pair of base hits.

Schimpf also garnered SCAC All-Tournament honors, going 5-for-9 in two games with two runs scored, two RBI’s and a home run.

For his selection as All-District, Schimpf will be compared against all outfielders from all eight districts for possible Academic All-America honors. The NCAA Division III Academic All-Americans will be announced May 24.
