SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents scored a goal in each half and held the Yellow Jackets to just two shots on target as Centenary (2-0) knocked off Howard Payne (0-2) 2-0 in the home opener of the 2016 season.

Sophomore and Shreveport native Nick Hammond found the back of the net twice to lead the Gents. With three goals so far in 2016, he has equaled his total from last season and leads the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in both points (six) and goals.

Halfway through the first period, Centenary put pressure on Howard Payne that eventually led to a goal. Hammond tallied a shot that was saved by Yellow Jackets’ goalkeeper Brandon McGibney, but he failed to corral the ball as the Gents received a corner opportunity. Senior Jeremy Klespis’ shot was saved by the goalie.

Less than 30 seconds later in the 24th minute, freshman Travis Schantz served a ball in the box and Hammond touched the ball in to put Centenary up 1-0. Hammond provided the insurance tally in the second half when sophomore Braylen Hollins passed the ball in the box on the right from near midfield. Hammond dribbled to the center and put a soft touch on the ball to find the back of the net.

Senior Centenary goalkeeper Rylan Whan (2-0) saved two shots en route to his fifth collegiate shutout. Howard Payne did not even have a shot on target until midway through the second half. In the 71st minute, Howard Payne’s Tracer Moore went left to try to cut the lead in half. However, Whan dove and grabbed the ball to keep the Yellow Jackets scoreless.

With the shutout, Whan ranks fifth in scoreless games in goal in Gents history.

Centenary returns to action Tuesday night, Sept. 6, at LeTourneau. Kickoff in Longview, Texas, is set for 8 p.m.
