SHREVEPORT, La. – Behind a pair of first half goals by sophomore Kati-Jayde Cunningham, Centenary (5-3, 2-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) trounced Schreiner (3-3-2, 1-1 SCAC) 3-0 in the conference opener Friday evening, Sept. 23.

"It was good to get back to form tonight," said head coach David Orr. "With a young team, last week we hit a bump in the road. The credit to getting back on track goes to the players, as they refocused this week in preparation for the games this weekend."

Cunningham amassed her seventh and eighth goals (fifth and sixth at home) of the season to secure her position as the leading goal-scorer in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

In the 14th minute, freshman Betzabet Bravo-Carmona stole the ball and found Cunningham near the penalty spot. She kicked left-footed to the left post to open up the scoring. In the 37th minute, sophomore Olivia Jackson ripped a free kick near midfield to Cunningham in front of the goal. Cunningham tapped it in for the score.

"We moved the ball effectively tonight and played as a team," explained coach Orr. "The win felt good and will rejoice in the victory tonight, but we get back to work tomorrow."

Cunningham placed all four shots on goal to lead Centenary. But despite the three-goal win, Schreiner held a 14-13 edge in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks.

Senior goalie Erica Coker (4-1) grabbed six saves for her third shutout of the season for the Ladies.

“The team showed determination and worked really hard for the result we wanted,” remarked Coker.

Coker’s counterpart for the Mountaineers also grabbed six saves but faced nine shots as her record for the season fell to 1-1.

The Ladies third goal of the evening was scored by freshman Serena Gallegos and was assisted by junior Riley Spudic in the 47th minute. Spudic served the ball in from the left side to the back post, and Gallegos headed the ball over the keeper’s head for her second goal of the season.

Schreiner’s Cailee Morgan put both shots on goal in the game.

The Ladies return to action Sunday, Sept. 5, against #3 Trinity. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
