SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies played the top two teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball, dropping both matches in straight sets as Centenary (2-13, 1-4 SCAC) fell to #5 Southwestern (15-0, 5-0 SCAC) in the morning 25-8, 25-11, 25-15. The Maroon and White fell in the nightcap to Trinity (10-3, 4-1 SCAC) 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 in the conference cross-divisional in Sherman, Texas, Saturday, Sept. 24.

Junior Desiree Frey led Centenary with 17 kills and a .268 hitting percentage for the day. Classmate Allison Lazewski added 29 assists and freshman Marissa Sandoval chipped in 15 digs.

The last match of the day saw Trinity score 12-of-14 to begin the first and hold a 23-13 lead before Centenary managed a late rally that fell short.  Two Tiger errors cut the deficit to eight, but an error by sophomore Michaela Brantley gave Trinity nine set points. Another service error put Centenary back on serve, and a Sandoval ace and sophomore Hailey Lawson kill repelled a pair of set points. Trinity ended the set with a kill by Kirby Smith. Smith led the Tigers for the match with 14 kills and one error on 21 swings for a .619 hitting percentage.

Centenary took the early lead in set two, but a service rally in the middle of the set swung the momentum to the Tigers. After both teams traded points to begin the second, a Frey kill and an ace by sophomore Ashley Brown gave the Ladies a 3-1 lead. Both teams stayed tight through 16 points as a double on a set by Trinity tied the frame at eight. However, a kill by Trinity’s Smith put herself on serve, producing six more points. A kill from Maggie Linker and Smith, with two attack errors, produced a Centenary timeout. Katrina Lieberman added a kill and Smith punctuated the run with a timeout.

Trinity claimed set two 25-13.

The Tigers won the final set by eight to finish the sweep. Frey led Centenary with nine kills while Sandoval added two aces.

Southwestern proved its high ranking in a straight-set sweep to kick off the morning. The Pirates scored the first six points of the first set and led 10-3, but Centenary cut in to the deficit to pull within four. Sophomore Shannon Orlopp added a kill to put Frey on serve, and the only Ladies ace of the match and a block by Orlopp and Brantley cut the deficit to 10-6.

Southwestern took 15-of-17 points to win the first set by 17.

The Pirates took the second set by 14 and the last by 10 to win in three sets.

Frey led Centenary with eight kills and one error on 18 swings (.389). Southwestern hit .379 as a team, led by Jamison Duck with 15 kills and only one error on 25 attempts (.560 hitting percentage) while Andie Alford added 10 digs and four aces.

While the Ladies played the top of the SCAC on day one, it will be a bit lighter on the final day of the cross-over as Centenary plays Schreiner (3-11, 0-5 SCAC) at 2 p.m. and Texas Lutheran (7-6, 1-4 SCAC) at 4 p.m.
