SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents soccer team had a few key opportunities to knot the score with the visiting Pirates, but the Maroon and White could not find the back of the net as Centenary (4-8, 1-7 SCAC) fell to Southwestern (7-5, 6-2 SCAC) 2-0 Friday night, Oct. 7, at Mayo Field.

After an early goal by the visitors, the Gents narrowly tied the game in the 28th minute. Freshman Bailey DeRoussel, who just entered the game, crossed a ball right in front of the goal for sophomore Nick Hammond. However, Hammond’s shot went over the goal. Nearly nine minutes later, freshman Gabe Rodriguez found himself in a 1v1 just outside and right of a box. However, Southwestern goalie Ryan Benner (6-3) just got a hand on the ball to keep Southwestern with a one goal lead.

Sophomore Colin Maloney had another chance as his shot was saved shortly in to the second half, but Dejan Savic scored the insurance goal when he ripped a shot near the right sideline, 30 yards out far post to put the visitors up 2-0.

Despite Southwestern only having a slim 13-8 edge in shots, the Pirates used an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Benner grabbed both shots for the shutout for Southwestern, while Centenary senior goalie Rylan Whan (4-8) took the loss after saving 6-of-8 shots.

Whan had 363 saves for his career, just nine short of Scott Wright (1988-91).

Christian Lopez opened the scoring for Southwestern when, in the eighth minute, a turnover found his foot just right of the box. He shot far post for his second goal of the season.

Centenary returns to action against Texas Lutheran on Sunday, Oct. 9. Kickoff scheduled for noon.
