KERRVILLE, Texas – The Ladies began a busy weekend with a pair of ranked teams, falling to #18 Trinity (20-6, 11-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) and #4 Southwestern (26-1, 11-1 SCAC) 25-14, 25-9, 25-20 25-21, 25-14, 25-10 in the nightcap at the SCAC Crossover in Kerrville, Texas.

Sophomore Hailey Lawson led the Ladies with 21 digs and 14 kills. Junior Desiree Frey added 10 kills while classmate Allison Lazewski contributed 27 assists.

In the nightcap, the Pirates jumped out to a 7-3 set one lead. However, Southwestern hit four attack errors to tie the set and an ace by freshman Marissa Sandoval put Centenary in the lead. A kill by Lawson forced a Southwestern timeout.

Tied at 15, Southwestern used a 7-2 run to take control of the set. Two errors and a kill by Haley Yu put the Pirates up three. Both teams sided out, but two Ladies errors and a Jamison Duck kill pushed the lead to 22-16.

Duck led the Pirates with a .500 hitting percentage (11 kills and one error on 20 swings) while Nikki Welch added 36 assists. Piper Sisemore added nine kills and five blocks.  Southwestern used a .311 edge in hitting and 7-2 on the block in the win.

Despite being down by six, Centenary rallied to pull within two. A kill by Lawson and two errors by the Pirates cut the deficit to 22-19. After both teams sided out, a bad set by Welch cut the deficit to two. However, a service error and a kill from Kate Mitchell gave the Pirates set one.

Southwestern claimed the final two sets by 11 and 14 for the win.

Down two sets in the first match, Centenary scored 6-of-7 to race to a 6-1 lead against Trinity in set three. A bad set gave Centenary the first point. Two aces by Lawson around a Frey kill pushed the Ladies to a 4-0 lead. After both teams sided out, an attack error pushed the lead to 6-1.

A sophomore Shyann Pisano ace put the Maroon and White up 17-15, but a 10-3 run ended the match. A service error and an overpass kill by Lauren Skrobarczyk tied the set. An attack error gave Centenary its final set lead, but another Skrobarczyk kill and an ace by Brooke Bastien pushed Trinity to its first lead in the set.

Sophomore Ashley Brown put herself on serve with a kill, but she hit a service error. Both team traded points, before Lazewski’s service error ignited a 4-0 run to end the set. Two Smith kills and a block by Jessye Castro gave Trinity a 25-20 win in the final set.

Lawson added 11 digs and seven kills to lead the Ladies, while Smith for Trinity hit .636 (14 kills and no errors on 22 swings). Trinity outhit Centenary .409-.110 for the match.

Centenary returns to action tomorrow with a pair of matches against Texas Lutheran and host Schreiner. The Ladies need to win both matches for a chance to qualify for the SCAC Tournament.
