SHREVEPORT, La. – Last night, it was the Ladies who used strong end of sets to knock off LeTourneau. Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29, it was the Blazers turn to flip the script.

Centenary (8-22) was the first to reach 20 points in the first and third sets, but Belhaven (13-17) rallied to claim a 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 straight set victory.

Set one saw the Blazers take a 14-11 lead, but a service run by sophomore Hailey Lawson gave Centenary its first lead of the match. After a service error gave Lawson the serve, a kill from sophomore Makenzie Shaw, an error by Belhaven and a solo block from junior Desiree Frey put Centenary in the lead.

With the Ladies on serve up 16-15, an ace by freshman Marissa Sandoval and a kill from Frey gave the Ladies its largest lead of the set.

Tied at 23, kills from Belhaven’s Lauren Whiting and Blaykleigh Smythe put the Blazers up a set.

Sophomore Michaela Brantley helped put the Ladies up 3-0 to begin the second set. Two kills around a Brantley-Frey block gave the Maroon and White the early advantage. However, a Smythe kill and three Lexi Bentley aces gave the Blazers the lead.

Bentley finished the match with seven total aces.

With Centenary up 17-16, Belhaven went on a 6-0 run en route to a second-set win. A Centenary error tied the set, while kills from Brantley and Jackie Gunderson out Belhaven up. Two Ladies errors and a Smythe kill finished the run.

Centenary cut the deficit to 23-20, but two kills by the visitors off overpasses ended set two.

Belhaven raced out and scored the first six points of the third set. Centenary fought back and took a 20-19 lead, but two attack errors and kills from Hope Tourney and Anelle Anderson put Belhaven up three. Centenary cut the deficit to 23-22 when a sophomore Ashley Brown and Shaw block brought Centenary within two, but kills from Gunderson and Anderson ended the match.

Lawson managed a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Shaw contributed four aces and 12 assists. For Belhaven, Abby Herman had a match-best 18 digs.

Centenary concludes the 2016 season Sunday afternoon against Rust. First serve is set for noon.
