Gents and Ladies Basketball Prepares for Busy Weekend

JACKSON, Miss. – The Centenary basketball teams each play a pair of games in the Southern Athletic Association-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Classic this weekend, November 19-20.

The Ladies play at 1 p.m. both days, kicking off competition Saturday afternoon against Hendrix and playing host Millsaps Sunday. The Gents play at 5 p.m. both days, taking on Hendrix on Saturday and closing the Classic on Sunday against the Majors.

Warm Welcome

For the second-straight season, a Centenary Ladies coach making his head coaching debut can claim a successful start.

Despite being down seven early, the Ladies led by as much as nine in the second half en route to a 70-64 win.

Freshman Deunya Small grabbed 20 rebounds, the most boards in a season-opening game in program history. It was also the most rebounds by a freshman in a single game in program history.

Sophomore Jasmine Morris led all scorers with 19.

Back in Familiar Territory

Junior Travion Kirkendoll scored 25 points and added four steals in the Gents 90-77 loss to East Texas Baptist in the season opener Tuesday, November 15. Having led the conference last year in steals per game (with two per contest), he currently leads the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in that category.

Last season’s SCAC leading scorer with 19.6 points per game, he sits second in that category in 2016-17.

Last Season’s Classic

Centenary hosted the SAA-SCAC Classic last November in Shreveport. The Gents started the tournament by matching a school record with 20 threes, downing Millsaps in the biggest win in head coach Adam Walsh’s seven seasons. In the weekend finale for the Gents, Centenary rallied from a 15-point deficit, led by as much as 18, and held on for the eight-point win.

The Ladies split on the weekend, as then-head coach Justin LeBlanc knocked off his alma mater, Millsaps, to begin the weekend. Centenary used a 13-3 edge in the second quarter to knock off the Majors. Brianna Edwards scored 13 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. Centenary lost the weekend finale to Hendrix.

Next Up

After a week off, the Ladies and Gents return to action for a pair of post-Thanksgiving weekend contests. The Ladies and Gents travel to Longview, Texas, to take on LeTourneau in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 26. The two teams tip off the home schedule next Sunday, November 27, with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. against McMurry.
