SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies cut a 10-point, third quarter deficit to one, but the Blazers never surrendered the lead as Centenary (2-6) fell to Belhaven (3-3) 77-68 Saturday night, December 10.

After Belhaven increased the lead to 10 thanks to eight unanswered late in the third, sophomore Jasmine Morris hit a pair from the like. Senior DeiAnna Hall stole the inbounds, and found sophomore Savanah Doty for the fastbreak three. Centenary trailed 54-49 heading into the fourth quarter.

Morris became the fastest Ladies basketball player to hit 500 points (34 games) when she, fittingly, made a pair from the line at the 3:18 mark in the first quarter. Morris, 10th in the country in free throws made last year and 28th this year, matched a career best with 14 free throws made (on 16 attempts) and scored 21 points.

Doty came off the bench for her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds, also swatting three shots.

With Centenary down 58-52 in the fourth, Doty before the Ladies forced a stop. Freshman Essa Badon missed a three, but Morris grabbed a rebound while Belhaven was whistled for a technical foul. Morris made both from the line, and on the ensuing offensive possession, Doty just missed giving the Maroon and White the lead when her three was in the cylinder but spun out.

The Blazers capitalized when Ke’Asia Gray hit a jumper. Centenary junior Peyton Hurst answered with a three and the Ladies trailed 60-59 with 6:06 left. Candler Gregory answered with a trey, and Gray hit another jumper to quickly push the deficit back to six.

Belhaven never led by less than four the rest of the game.

The Blazers shot 38.2 percent (29-for-76) compared to 30.5 percent (18-for-59) for Centenary, but Belhaven capitalized on a 44-18 edge in points in the paint.

With the Ladies down 17-16, Morris hit a pair from the line with a minute left in the first quarter. Hurst added a layup off a missed three to beat the buzzer as Centenary led 20-17 after the first quarter. Both teams went scoreless for nearly the first two minutes of the second, but a cut to the lane and a layup by senior Linda Gomez Gil put Centenary up 22-17, its largest lead of the game.

Kelsey Brown answered with a three and a layup by Courtney Harper for Belhaven tied the game at 22. The teams tied five times in the second quarter alone, as the Blazers and Ladies were knotted at 36 at the intermission.

With Belhaven up 46-44 with 4:59 left, it scored eight straight while holding the Ladies scoreless in a 3:23 span. Sierra Pittman made a three the hard way, and Tajee Harper made a pair from the line. Pittman made a layup and split from the charity stripe to open up a 54-44 Blazers lead with 2:37 left in the third.

Belhaven made 4-of-6 from the line in the final 1:37 to put the game away.

Gray came off the bench to lead Belhaven with 17 points in 22 minutes, while Pittman scored 14 in only 19 minutes. Vamikka Smith added 13 points and Samara Dingiswayo added 11 boards.

Centenary returns to action next Monday, December 19, when it takes on Rust as part of a double header with the Gents beginning at 1 p.m.
