Tuesday, March 14, 2017

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Good new Tuesday (March 14) continued for the Centenary baseball Gents as juniors Kaleb Kirk and Chris Zapata were named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive time.

Kirk improved his record to 4-1 on the year with a stellar outing in Centenary's run-ruled, 12-0 win against Austin on Friday night, March 10. He had 13 strikeouts in 6.2 innings, the most by a SCAC pitcher since Taylor Henry registered 14 in a game in March 2015. Kirk allowed two hits and three walks, with only one Austin College player getting as close as 90-feet from home.

Setting the tone early, Kirk struck out the side in the first inning and 6-of-7 to begin the game.

Zapata took over the sole lead in the conference and sits second in the nation with his fifth and sixth home runs of the season in Centenary’s three-game sweep of Austin College to open up SCAC play. He drove in 10 RBI’s in the three-game set, including driving in the first six runs of the Gents 9-6 win in the series finale against the ‘Roos Saturday.

For the season, Zapata leads the nation in RBI’s (36), sits 32nd in hits (27), and ranks 45th in runs scored (45).

Centenary opens up a three-game series against Schreiner Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
