SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies scored seven unanswered to beat the Pirates 7-2 in game one, but the visitors scored the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly in game two as Centenary (11-17, 8-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) split a doubleheader with Southwestern (16-10, 9-4) on senior day in the penultimate home games Saturday afternoon, April 8.

With a win tomorrow or an Austin College loss, the Maroon and White will clinch an SCAC Tournament berth.

Tied at 2 in the bottom of the fourth of game one, the Ladies used aggressive base running to score the go-ahead runs. With a runner on first and two down, senior Mallory Ford singled to centerfield. Southwestern tried to throw out senior Lizzie Moran at third, but she reached safely and Ford moved down to second. Sophomore Payton LeBlanc followed with a hustle double down the left field line that scored the would-be winning run and moved Ford to third. Freshman pinch hitter Kristyn Peacock followed with a two-RBI single.

The Ladies scored two insurance runs in the fifth. First, freshman Haley Campbell hit an RBI triple. Sophomore Cassie Gonzales followed with a grounder to second, but the Pirates chose to throw to the plate. Campbell evaded the tag to put Centenary up 7-2.

LeBlanc and junior Kelsey Ancelot, the top-two players in the line-up, went a combined 4-for7 with three runs scored and two RBI’s. Junior Anna Dunn went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI’s. Sophomore Lauren Beadle (3-4) took the win in the circle for Centenary, allowing only a two-run home run in 4.2 innings of work.

After Paige McShan hit a two-run home run in the first for Southwestern, her only hit in four at-bats, Centenary responded with one in the first and third to tie the game. LeBlanc led off the game with a triple and scored on a Pirates’ error with Dunn trying a squeeze bunt. With two outs in the third, Ancelot hit an infield single, stole second, and scored on Dunn’s single up the middle.

Chandler Smith (2-4) took the loss for the Pirates, allowing seven hits and five runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

In game two, both teams combined for eight hits, but a lone run was scored when Southwestern’s Kaitlynn Copher hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Sophomore Nichole Aldridge (7-9) took the complete-game loss for Centenary, while Southwestern’s Lindsey Longuet (8-4) picked up the complete-game win.

Centenary will play its final home games of the 2017 season Sunday, April 9, with a doubleheader with the Pirates beginning at noon.
