JACKSON, Miss. – The Centenary Ladies soccer team, coming off its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament berth since 2013, kicks off the 2017 campaign Friday afternoon against Huntingdon in Jackson, Mississippi.

It will be a year of change, starting at head coach. After three seasons, David Orr stepped down and Greg Cathell became the fifth head coach in the 25-year history of the program. The Ladies also return only 32.2 percent of its offense last season, led by sophomore Serena Gallegos’ four goals.

In goal, Centenary also lost the services of four-year starter Erica Coker, who broke the school record for career saves.

However, the Ladies add 10 newcomers for the season, including sophomore Shreveport-native Kyra Montes, who spent the previous season with Mississippi College. Last season for the Choctaws, Montes ranked second in points (15), assists (seven) and fourth in goals (four).

Centenary, who hosts the annual SCAC Soccer Tournament November 3-5, was selected to finish fifth in a poll conducted by the Conference’s head coaches and released last weekend.

Preseason Poll Information

The opening weekend, on the campus of Millsaps, features a Friday afternoon game against Huntingdon at 3 p.m. This will be the first ever meeting between the Hawks and Ladies.

The weekend concludes Sunday against the University of the Ozarks at noon. This is the first meeting between the Maroon and White and the Eagles since 2014, a 1-0 Centenary loss in overtime. However, the Ladies won the only other meeting, 5-1, in 2011.

Centenary will open up home and SCAC play next Friday, September 8, when it hosts Austin College at 5 p.m.
