SEGUIN, Texas – Centenary (7-9, 1-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) gave #4 Southwestern (16-2, 4-1 SCAC) all it could handle in the third set, but lost the set and the match to the Pirates 25-16, 25-9, 25-21. In the first match of the day, the Ladies fell to host Texas Lutheran (9-7, 3-2 SCAC) 25-14, 25-19, 25-12.

In the final set of the day, the Pirates won the first point before three errors put Centenary up 3-1. After a pair of side outs by both teams, another Southwestern error and a kill from senior Desiree Frey allowed the Ladies to double up Southwestern through nine points. Leading 15-14 later in the set, freshman Brittany Risner and junior Hailey Lawson recorded kills to again push the lead back to three.

Lawson led Centenary with seven kills for the match.

Tied at 20, Southwestern scored 5-of-6 to finish the match. Kills by Kate Mitchell and Jamison Duck gave the Pirates the lead for good. Juniors Michaela Brantley and Shyann Pisano teamed up for a block to cut the deficit to one, but another Mitchell kill and an attack error put the Pirates with match point. An assisted block by Mitchell and Piper Sisemore ended the match.

Mitchell recorded eight kills on 13 attempts with one error to hit .538, adding four blocks. Sisemore and Maya Clausen led Southwestern with 10 kills. The Pirates took advantage by hitting .347 for the match, compared to just .032 for the Ladies.

In the first match of the day against the hosts, Centenary could not side out service runs near the end of sets and lost in three. However, the Ladies saved three set points in the second set with a pair of Lawson kills and a Bulldogs error. However, a Caley Young kill gave Texas Lutheran the 25-19 set win.

Lawson and Frey both led Centenary with six kills.

In the first down 18-14, Bryten Mitchan put the Bulldogs on serve with a kill, followed by a kill from Kelsi Menn. A pair of attack errors and kills from Jaci Chambers and Hannah Mikelonis put the Bulldogs on set point. Mitchan followed that with a kill to give the Bulldogs set one.

Two kills, a block, and two Centenary errors scored the final five points to give the home team a 25-12 third set win and the match.

Mitchan and Mikelonis both had 13 kills, while only one error on 23 swings gave Mikelonis a .522 hitting percentage.

Centenary wrap up the first half of conference play Sunday, October 1, against #4 Trinity at 10 a.m., before finishing the weekend against Schreiner at 2 p.m.
