SHREVEPORT, La. – It took a marathon game and then a combined 10 shootout kicks, but it was the Ladies who advanced as Centenary (4-11-3) fought to a scoreless tie with Southwestern (3-12-2) in the first game of the 2017 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Friday afternoon, November 3.

After a pair of halves and two overtimes where no one could find the back of the net, the game finished as a tie but shootout kicks determined who would advance. Centenary had the luxury of going second, and freshman goalie Maggie Pitcher stopped Madison Vardeman’s shot to begin the shootout. Sophomore Emilee Byrd and junior Liz Knight made the first two Centenary attempts, as the Ladies led 2-0 after two attempts for each team as Southwestern’s second attempt sailed high.

While Centenary missed its next two attempts, it held a 2-1 lead as Southwestern made one and hit the post on its fourth attempt. While the Pirates Angelica Grayson made the fifth try to tie it at two, freshman Pamela Fonseca’s attempt found the back of the net to advance the Ladies.

Centenary dominated Southwestern 23-4 in shots, 14-2 in shots on goal, and 10-2 on corner kicks. Pitcher made one save to record her fifth shutout of the season in goal for Centenary, while Mary Cardone stopped all 14 shots faced for her lone shutout of the season.

Centenary returns to action Saturday, November 4, against top-seeded and 11th-ranked Trinity. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
