SHREVEPORT, La – Cadie Hancock’s three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning sent Centenary’s softball team to a walk-off 10-7 victory over Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon. It was Hancock’s only hit, but came at the right moment, extending her team lead in homers on the season to four.

The Ladies (2-19) fell behind early in the first inning 2-0 with Kayla Irvin getting a double for two RBI. Centenary was able to respond with a run of their own in the bottom half off a Lauren Swift single.

The Maroon and White gained momentum in the middle innings. First they tied the game at 2-2 off a Lindsey Sconce single to score Swift. An inning later Swift, who had a three-for-four day, knocked a double at the centerfield wall to get two RBI and give Centenary its first lead in the contest. Hancock added a run on a pass ball to make the score 5-2.

The Pirates gained a run in the sixth to cut the deficit 5-3, but there was a key play that possibly changed the inning. With one out, center fielder Caitlyn Gentry made a spectacular diving catch just outside the infield to keep two runners from being on the bases and added the second out. It shortened the inning and only one run would come around later for the Black and Gold.

Centenary extended the lead with two runs coming off a Sconce double. It proved to be important runs too for what happened in the top of the seventh.

Ashleigh Scott led the frame off with a solo homer to narrow the score 7-4. A few batters later, with the Pirates down to its final strike and out, pinch hitter Caroline Young connected on a pitch to send over the right field wall and even the score 7-7.

Gentry led off the bottom seventh with a single and advanced to second on an Erin Crites bunt. Also down to two outs, Whitney Patterson kept the Ladies alive with a single to set up the heroics for Hancock.

The walk-off snaps an 11-game losing slide for the Maroon and White who also earned its first home and Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference win. The Pirates (15-8, 0-1 SCAC) end a nine-game winning streak.

Nicole Warren and Whitney Patterson set the table at the top of the order with multi-hit games with two and three respectively. Lynsi Unruh also had two knocks, while Jessica McDonald and Gentry added hits to contribute to a season-high 15.

Unruh (2-11) earned the win pitching 7.0 innings and allowing seven runs on 12 hits. Kelsey Kingston (12-3) suffered the loss tossing 6.2 innings and surrendering 10 runs on 15 hits. She did strikeout eight Centenary hitters in the outing.

Game two began with a huge Pirate’s first inning, banging out 11 runs. Six RBI came from Irvin who hit two homeruns in the inning, her first for a grandslam.

Rain came down heavily following that, and the game has been suspended in the second inning. Play will resume at 11 a.m. Sunday with the original scheduled doubleheader following.
