SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies were able to score the first two earned runs and only the fourth and fifth hit in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play off the Bulldog’s Maitlin Raycroft, but Centenary (10-14, 7-3) allowed two in the seventh of game one and trailed as much as 9-1 in game two against #19 Texas Lutheran (24-4, 12-0 SCAC) in a doubleheader Friday night, March 31.

Tied at one in the bottom of the sixth of game one with Raycroft in relief for the Bulldogs, junior Anna Dunn walked to leadoff the inning. Sophomore Wendy Gillet grounded to the first-base side of the second baseman, but she bobbled the ball as two runners were on base with no outs. Freshman Haley Campbell bunted back to the pitcher, but Raycroft was not ready to field it as it got by her. With the infielders converging, the ball found no man’s land near second base. Dunn scored on the play and freshman pinch runner Kaitlin Price scooted to third. However, a pair of strikeouts around a popped-up bunt foul kept the Ladies up 2-1 after six innings.

The Ladies scored an unearned run in the first off of Texas Lutheran starter Amanda Lochte when sophomore Payton LeBlanc led off the game with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. LeBlanc moved to third on a groundout before Dunn reached on a fielder’s choice bunt. Gillet then grounded out to the right side to put Centenary up 1-0 after one inning.

Campbell led Centenary from the plate by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Nichole Aldridge (7-7) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in seven innings of work.

Texas Lutheran scored one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to claim the come-from-behind win. In the sixth, Kaymee Gooden doubled, stole third, and scored on Kelsie McEachern’s single. In the seventh with one out, Lainey Hebert hit an infield single before Kyla Lockley singled to left. Centenary tried to get the runner going to third, but she beat the throw and Lockley went into second. Cassie Roche followed with a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt that tied the game, but the throw home got past the catcher to allow Lockley to also score and put the visitors up 3-2.

Raycroft (13-2), who took the win in both games, allowing one hit and one run with one walk while striking out five in two innings of work of the first. She gave up one run and one hit in 6.2 innings of game two.

Lockley led the Bulldogs from the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run scored in game one.

In game two, Centenary fell behind 4-0 and 9-1 in the five-run loss. Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth, LeBlanc was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on junior Kelsey Ancelot’s bunt single. Dunn singled to center to score a run. However, the throw to the infield allowed Dunn to take second and Ancelot to try to score. Ancelot made it safely and allowed Dunn to take third. Gillet’s sacrifice fly pushed another run across, but a hit by pitch and double play ended the Ladies’ threat.

Down 4-0 with one out in the fourth for Centenary, Ancelot walked, stole second, and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Dunn led Centenary from the plate in game two by going 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Lauren Beadle took the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Texas Lutheran led 1-0 after two innings, but Roche homered, Gooden tripled, and McEachern singled to put the visitors up 3-0 after three. Up 4-1, the Bulldogs scored two in the fifth on a bases loaded walk and wild pitch. Nicole Snow added a three-run home run to right field in the sixth as Texas Lutheran led 9-1.

The Ladies return to action Saturday, April 1, when it hosts #19 Texas Lutheran for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
