SEGUIN, Texas – The Ladies cut the deficit to one after trailing 4-1 in the second inning, but the Tigers scored three insurance runs in the seventh inning as third-seeded Centenary (15-24) fell to sixth-seeded Trinity (15-26) 7-3 in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Friday, April 28.

Down 4-1, the Maroon and White scored single tallies in the third and sixth to cut the deficit to one. In the third with one out, junior Kelcey Ancelot walked, stole second, and scored on junior Anna Dunn’s single. In the sixth, Dunn walked and senior Mallory Ford reached on an error. A one-out, RBI hit by Gillet brought the Ladies with one, but Ford was thrown out at the plate in a rundown to diffuse the Centenary threat.

Gillet led the Ladies from the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Dunn had a hit, two RBI’s, and a run scored. Sophomore Nichole Aldridge (9-14) took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs (two earned) and one walk in four innings pitched.

Dunn got the Ladies on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.

Trinity scored a pair in both the first and second innings to take a 4-1 lead. In the first, Rylie Goldwait singled to leadoff the game. After a sacrifice, she moved to third on Rebecca Berreth’s single. After a stolen base put both runners in scoring position, Danielle Ruiz singled to put Trinity up 2-0.

In the second, Emily Reed led off with a single and was lifted for a pinch runner. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt put both runners into scoring position. An RBI groundout and an infield single by Sara McCarty put the Tigers up 4-1.

In the seventh, Berreth doubled and scored on Ruiz’s single. After Trinity loaded the bases, Mackenzie Hill hit a two-out, two-RBI single to increase the deficit at four.

Ruiz led Trinity by going 3-for-4 with three RBI’s, while Hill added two hits and three RBI’s.

Centenary softball returns to action Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m. against fourth-seeded Schreiner.
