LONGVIEW, Texas – For the second time this season in midweek matches, the Ladies jumped out to a two set lead. Also for the second time this season, the opponent rallied for a 5-set win as Centenary (2-12) lost to LeTourneau (6-8) 28-30, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-10 Wednesday night, Sept. 21.

Centenary won a thrilling first set and held on in the second to go in to intermission with a 2-0 lead. Up 21-18 in the first, LeTourneau scored the next five points to take a 23-21 advantage and force a Centenary timeout. After a service error by the Yellow Jackets, kills from sophomore Makenzie Shaw and Desiree Frey put Centenary on set point. LeTourneau rebuffed that set point and another set point at 25-24. After a Morgan Weaver kill and an assisted block by Skylar Horan and Jenny Olejar, LeTourneau gave themselves its first set point.

LeTourneau used a 15-3 advantage on the block. Morgan Weaver had eight blocks while Olejar added six.

LeTourneau had three set points repelled, and a service error tied the match at 28. A kill by sophomore Michaela Brantley and her block with teammate Shannon Orlopp gave Centenary an exciting set one win.

The second set saw LeTourneau take a 7-6 lead, but a service error put sophomore Hailey Lawson on a long service run. Three service aces by Lawson and a bad set by the YellowJackets gave Centenary an 11-7 lead and forced a home team timeout. Centenary held an 8-5 advantage in service aces with four aces from Lawson

The break did nothing to squash the momentum as a kill each from Frey and sophomore Ashley Brown, as well as two attack errors put Centenary 15-7. LeTourneau cut it to the lead to 17-16, but a Frey and Brantley kill, as well three attack errors, pushed the advantage to 22-17. LeTourneau sided out, but a Lawson kill and another attack error put the Ladies on set point. The YellowJackets saved a few set points, but a Lawson kill put Centenary up 2-0 with the 4-point win in the second.

Frey led Centenary with 16 kills and 20 digs. Lawson led the team with 23 digs and nine kills of her own, as Shaw came close to a triple-double with 17 assists, 11 digs and seven kills. Junior Allison Lazewski had 21 assists and 15 digs while freshman Marissa Sandoval managed 21 digs.

However, the hit .015 on the match (46 kills and 43 errors on 200 swings).

Set three saw LeTourneau jump out to an 18-15 lead, but a service error, ace by Lazewski and a Lawson kill off an overpass tied the match. The Yellow Jackets scored seven of eight points to cut the Centenary lead in half. Five attack errors by the Ladies and two kills from Mikayla Thomas ended the set.

The home team took the fourth set by nine to force a deciding fifth.

Centenary led 8-6 halfway through the fifth, but Olejar found the floor on an attack attempt to put herself on serve. Olejar used two service aces, two Centenary errors and a Savanna Stutts kill to lead 12-8. Stutts co-led LeTourneau with 11 kills for the match, while Dolores Henson added 19 digs and 11 kills.

A kill by Brown and an attack error by the YellowJackets cut the deficit to 12-10. Kills by Stutts and Ashlyn Johnson put LeTourneau on set point, and Centenary’s 43rd attack error ended the match.

Centenary returns to action this weekend, Sept. 24-25, for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross-Divisional at Austin College. The Ladies will face off against Schreiner, Trinity, Texas Lutheran, and fifth-ranked Southwestern.
