Belhaven takes season series from Ladies
JACKSON, Miss.– Centenary’s attempts to avoid a season sweep by Belhaven and earn its first volleyball win of fell short again Tuesday night as the Blazers took a three-set match at Rugg Arena, 25-11, 25-16, 25-14.
The Ladies fall to 0-16 on the season after breaking from Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Blazers jump to 15-3 with the sweep. The Ladies return to the court Oct. 6 with two SCAC contests against Trinity (1 p.m.) and Austin College (3:30 p.m.) in Sherman,Texas. The Ladies close the weekend with an 11 a.m. match against the University of Dallas Sunday.
Belhaven jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and rattled off extended that to 18-4 before the Ladies scored six of the next nine, but BU rallied for four straight to take the 1-0 lead.
“We came out flat and then Christina (NeSmith) hurt her ankle, so we played shell-shocked after that,” head coach Jon Stenman said. “We committed 47 errors and scored just 41 points. Our team really needs to take notice of that. That’s something that, as the coach, I need to find a way to better prepare the team. We do have a young team, but at some point age can’t be a factor. We have to be more composed and more disciplined.”
Centenary jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the second set before the Blazers knotted things at 10 apiece, which sparked a string of seven straight Belhaven points to put the set out of reach. Centenary climbed within five at 19-14, but the Blazers scored six of the last eight points.
After digging an early 20-9 deficit in the final set, two Katelyn Alexander kills, one by Chelsea Petska and a Belhaven attack accounted for a string of four straight Centenary points to pull within 20-13, but a Jesi Wilcox service error and Alyson Plyler ace sparked five of the next six points for BU to close the match.
BU’s Taylor Williams recorded a match-high 10 kills with just two errors, hitting .348 on the day. Brooke Bahlinger led Centenary with seven kills in 23 attempts with three errors (.174).
