SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Centenary College volleyball team (3-12, 0-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) hung with #18 Southwestern (14-1, 5-0) in the first few points of the match, but the Ladies fell in straight sets to the Pirates, 25-12, 25-11, 25-12 Saturday afternoon, September 26, in the SCAC Cross Divisional, hosted by Trinity.

Centenary began the first set quickly when sophomore Desiree Frey and freshman Michaela Brantley teamed up for a block, followed by a Frey kill. Southwestern answered with the next three points, and both teams sided out and the Pirates held a 4-3 lead. Freshman Makenzie Shaw wrapped a pair of kills around a Southwestern error and the Ladies led 6-4. Southwestern answered by winning 10-of-11 points to take the lead, taking advantage of seven Centenary errors.

Southwestern took advantage of Centenary’s negative hitting, outswinging the Ladies .276 to negative-.089. Freshman Hailey Lawson recorded a match-high 13 digs while Sydney Rochelle led the Pirates off the bench in both assists (13) and digs (eight).

Centenary returns to action tomorrow morning, taking on Schreiner at 10 a.m. and host Trinity at noon.
