Season Preview

Interview with the SCAC

It will be an unusual make-up for Centenary in 2016 for fourth-year head coach Caley Carter. The team will feature no seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and two freshmen.

Despite losing six players from last year’s squad, Centenary returns players who generated 73.6 percent (739-of-1004) of its kills as well as 79.2 percent of its digs (1137-of-1428). But where the Ladies were the most lethal was from the service line. Centenary led the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with 1.71 aces per set, and even broke the Centenary aces in a single match record. They managed 30 aces in only three sets October 21 against Rust.

Junior outside hitter Desiree Frey easily led the team last year with 242 kills (2.35 per set) and a .144 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Hailey Lawson contributed all-around for the Ladies, even appearing as a libero in a few matches. She led the team with 344 digs (3.28 per set), finished second with 165 kills (1.57 kills per set) and added four double-doubles.

Junior setter Allison Lazewski led the team last year with 476 assists (4.37 per set).

Although Centenary loses more than half of its blocking from last season, sophomore middle blocker Michaela Brantley returns after finishing second on the team in 2015 with 41 blocks. She tallied 11 kills in 14 attempts with no errors (.786 percent) at Jarvis Christian on October 7.

Finally, Centenary welcomes two defensive specialists in freshmen Kristian Loving and Marrisa Sandoval to compliment sophomore Amanda Farr. Mostly playing libero in 2015, Farr finished third on the team with 238 digs (2.45 digs per set).

The Ladies, picked to finish eighth in the SCAC in a vote among the conference’s head coaches, will host the 2016 SCAC Tournament. Centenary will also host its annual Halloween Tournament October 28-30.
