SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies captured the first two sets, but a big rally in the third and wins in the fourth and fifth by the Bulldogs gave Centenary (1-4) a 3-2 loss to Jarvis Christian (6-6) 17-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-13.

Sophomore Makenzie Shaw nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 22 assists, 10 digs and nine kills. Classmate Hailey Lawson upper her season digs per set average to 3.65, recording 20 digs and 15 kills for her second double-double in three matches.

Four players in all tallied double-digit digs for the home team. Besides Shaw and Lawson, freshman Marissa Sandoval had a career best 19 digs while junior Desiree Frey chipped in 14.

The Ladies managed 18 aces in the match, including nine in the first two sets, to sweep the first two frames. The Ladies held a slim 17-16 lead in the first set when Lawson etched a pair of kills around two Jarvis Christian errors. Shaw finished the run with an ace, finishing the match with four total.

After a Frey error, sophomore Michaela Brantley had a kill, Frey aced and an error gave Centenary the first set by eight.

Jarvis Christian jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set two, but a 12-1 run later in the set gave Centenary the lead for good. Two Lawson kills and an ace by sophomore Allison Lazewski put the Maroon and White in the lead. Jarvis Christian tied it up, but Lawson teamed up with sophomore Ashley Brown to put herself on serve. She added three aces and Frey and Brown added kills as the Ladies led 16-8. Jarvis Christian cut the deficit to four, but six-of-seven points to end the set gave Centenary the frame by eight.

The Ladies looked like it would cruise to victory in the third, but the Bulldogs rallied from a 22-17 deficit and even repelled a match point. Down 24-23, Shaw hit a service error. From there, Heidi George and Talicia Long teamed up to put the Bulldogs on set point. A kill from Keandra Tillman set the match to the fourth.

Tillman also just missed a triple-double in the match with 15 digs, 13 assists and nine kills.

In the fourth, Jarvis Christian again rallied after trailing, this time 21-19. Kandice Jackson put the visitors on serve, and a pair of aces by Jamesha Hutton gave the Bulldogs the lead. Two kills by Jarvis Chrisitain around a bad set by Shaw pushed the match to the fifth.

In the fifth, Centenary fought of two of Jarvis Christian’s set points on Frey kills, but a long rally went the way of the visitors. A kill by Tillman ended the match and gave Jarvis Christian the come-from-behind triumph and a 15-13 set five win.

Centenary returns to action this weekend at the Bellhaven Tournament. First serve against Huntingdon is set for 5 p.m.
