SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies grabbed a brief lead in the first quarter, but the ‘Roos ended the frame on a 13-3 run and never looked back as Centenary (3-7, 0-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) lost to Austin College (8-3, 1-0 SCAC) 67-45 in the conference opener for both teams Friday night, December 30.

The first five minutes of the contest were nip and tuck, as a layup by freshman Deunya Small and a jumper by junior Peyton Hurst answered scores by the home team. Austin College then split from the line, and a layup by sophomore Jasmine Morris with 7:02 left in the first game Centenary its only lead of the game.

Both teams went scoreless nearly two minutes, but a tip-in and jumper Bryce Frank put the ‘Roos ahead by three with 4:39 left in the quarter.

A layup by Austin College was quickly answered with a jumper from senior Linda Gomez Gil, but a Caitlyn Collins layup and a Sierra Force jumper put the home team up seven. Morris split from the line for Centenary, but Austin College’s Mikayla Gasich hit a three as time expired in the first as the ‘Roos doubled up Centenary in the first quarter, 18-9.

Austin College led 33-25 at halftime, but won by more than 20 by holding the Ladies to 4-for-29 (13.8 percent) shooting in the second half. The Maroon and White shot 14-for-58 (24.1 percent) for the game.

Morris led Centenary with her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.

The home team led 43-30 with 3:16 left in the third, but eight unanswered extended the lead. Kendra Rainey cleaned up her own miss with a jumper, Collins made a pair from the line, and a layup and jumper by Frank pushed the lead to 21.

Collins came off the bench to give the ‘Roos a spark, scoring a game high 18 points. Frank went 8-for-14 from the floor for 16 points and added 10 boards for the double-double.

The Ladies return to action Monday afternoon, January 2, when the host Hendrix to open up 2017. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. All Centenary home athletic events are free admission.
