SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies held a nine-point lead with just a little more than four minutes left in regulation, but the Majors tied it up with a three with seven seconds left and never trailed in overtime as Centenary (0-2) fell to Millsaps (2-0) on the first day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference/Southern Athletic Association Classic hosted by Austin College in Sherman, Texas, Saturday afternoon, November 18.

Juniors Savanah Doty and Jasmine Morris scored 17 points and 16 points, respectively, to help the Ladies erase an eight-point, second quarter deficit to lead at halftime.

Down 24-16 in the second quarter, the Ladies scored 11 unanswered to take a three-point lead. Freshman Kayla King converted an old-fashioned three and teammate Ethany Cosby made the only fastbreak basket in the game. After both teams went scoreless the next two minutes, freshman Haylee Washington split from the line and Doty nailed a triple to give Centenary the lead with 1:46 left in the first half. Sophomore Deunya Small added a jumper to cap the run.

Washington finished the game with eight points and nine boards.

Braxton Thomas hit a jumper with 39 ticks left until half to end a more than five-minute scoring drought for Millsaps.

Millsaps took a 31-29 lead in the third before 10 unanswered by the Maroon and White in two-minute span. A jumper by Small tied the game, and two from the line for Doty pushed Centenary in the lead. Doty then hit back-to-back threes to quickly increase the lead to eight with 4:48 left in the third.

Doty, who at one time was 5-for-6 from three, finished the game 5-for-8 from distance.

Centenary led 52-43 with 4:20 left, but a 9-1 run by the Majors cut the lead to one with 32 seconds left. Brazia Jones hit a three and Anna Wilson added a layup off the offensive rebound. Jasmine Morris split from the line before neither team scored for the next 1:32. Dia Fortenberry hit both from the line to cut the lead to one, but Morris hit a pair from the charity stripe with 13 seconds left in regulation.

However, the Majors came down the court quickly and Megan Donaldson hit a triple to tie the game. Centenary advanced the ball to halfcourt, but Morris’ jumper at the buzzer was missed to send the game into overtime.

Centenary overcame a five-point deficit in the extra period when Doty hit a three and Morris added a layup, but Millsaps hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final 34 seconds in the win.

Fortenberry and Millicent Butler both led Millsaps with 12 points each.

Centenary concludes the weekend Sunday, November 19, when it takes on Hendrix. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
